A.I: Revolutionizing the Construction Industry
In an earlier blog regarding this subject, I discussed the ethical issues of A.I in the construction and design industry. This post concludes my trilogy on this topic. You can familiarize yourself with the other two entries here and here.
The Future of A.I in Construction
Robots! Is there a "Terminator"-type situation on the horizon? Honestly, who knows? That's not the main subject of this blog. Personally, I'm not very worried about it. I’m more concerned about the geopolitical situation and the possibility of a World War III. However, I try not to dwell on it, considering the concept of "mutually assured destruction" that comes with nuclear proliferation. But I digress...
In my previous blogs, I highlighted how useful A.I can be in architecture and construction. A.I undertakes computational and compliance tasks, freeing up professionals to engage in more creative and functional work. This can lead to better outcomes in our projects. But what role does ethical responsibility play in this process within the construction industry?
Questions About Ethical Responsibility
As we embrace A.I, there will be a need for more rigorous checks. Until these systems become proficient—having learned from millions of data sets to produce fully compliant, resolved designs—we humans must ensure that what they're generating is correct and relevant. For example, I currently use A.I to help write this blog. However, I must review it carefully. Without my oversight, it might be filled with American spelling and some content could end up being boring or incorrect.
But how do I maintain control of my message? At what point will it be evident that it’s the A.I speaking and not me? Well, I think it’s clear right now that this is still my voice. Try getting A.I to generate text like this and see how it performs. Spelling mistakes and all!
The Risk of Losing Expertise
What are the ethical issues associated with A.I working in design and construction? One significant concern is the potential loss of the essential skillset and knowledge required to design buildings effectively.
When I draft plans, it gives me the opportunity to catch oversights or minor issues. Can A.I do this? Can it self-correct when necessary? As I review the plans anyway, I often wonder: why wouldn’t I just draw everything myself?
If any issues arise, the designer must understand what has been drawn, why it meets the compliance requirements, and how it addresses all buildability issues before proceeding with any changes. This process could theoretically take longer and require more oversight as a result.
A Cautious Approach to A.I Integration
For all these reasons and more, we need to proceed with caution. It may be beneficial to introduce computer analysis gradually and in a controlled manner. Taking small, measured steps initially allows us to build a knowledge base and correct any errors as we go. This approach will be tricky since each construction site presents its own unique challenges. However, the responsibility will always lie in the hands of the designer. This method represents a considered approach to integrating A.I into our industry.
Robots can help us in various aspects of construction and design, but we must ensure that we don’t relinquish the entire process to them.
Conclusion: Embracing the Future with Care
Ultimately, A.I has the potential to revolutionize how we approach construction and design. However, as we step into this new era, we must do so with a clear understanding of our ethical responsibilities. By walking carefully and staying vigilant, we can harness A.I's benefits while retaining our invaluable human insights.

My friend thinks he is so smart! He told me an onion is the only food that makes you cry, so I threw a coconut at his face.
